Manufacturers are often the unsung heroes of the supply chain, and Black History Month is all about honoring unsung heroes. So as we close out Black History month 2022, we wanted to take a moment to recognize some of the black-owned manufacturing businesses in areas we service. As manufacturing system integrators, we always want to open a dialogue with manufacturers, we can supply high-quality industrial packaging, labeling, and coding equipment to aid their continual growth.
So for starters, here are two Blacked owned manufacturing companies we recently discovered and would like to get to know:
#1 Maroon Sausage Company: Food Manufacturer in Brooklyn, NY.
Founder and Owner Howard Allen created the Maroon Sausage Company’s Jamaican Jerk Seasoning…in a Sausage as an expression of flavors created in the mountains of Jamaica by the Maroon people long ago…he added their story and flavors to the sausage game.
The Maroon Sausage Company was created in a collision of cultures that can only happen in a place like New York City, where people from around the country, and the world, come to share in each others’ cultural experiences. That being said, the jerk chicken spice blend used in our sausages came about in a very natural way—in the kitchen of a couple in Brooklyn. One of whom is originally from the Chicago area, where people eat lots of sausages, the other with roots in Jamaica, where people often use jerk. And there you have it—jerk chicken sausage.

#2 Electro Soft, Inc. (ESI), Electronics Manufacturer, Philadelphia, PA area.
Electro Soft, Inc. (ESI) was founded by Jim and Sheila Wallace in 1986. ESI is dedicated to creating and demonstrating linked component product lines, quality, and service. The company strives for the very best in all three areas and is committed to operating on a sound financial basis of profitability, growth, and increasing the overall value for customers and partners. With an operating history spanning over 35 years, ESI is one of the largest independent contract manufacturers for circuit boards and wire harnesses in the Philadelphia Tri-State area. Today ESI is run by the daughter of Jim and Sheila Wallace: President and CEO Karla Trotman, who has been with the company in one form or another since its founding in 1986. She started cutting wire by hand and earned 25 cents an hour for sitting at a bench and using a ruler to mark the various lengths she had to make for her father. Karla graduated to stripping the wires and eventually helped operate the wave soldering machine. She holds a Master’s of Business Administration from Drexel University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Logistics from Penn State University. She graduated with a minor in the Legal Environment of Business and received a Purchasing Management Certificate.
